Lubec Arts Alive 2011 a Success!

It takes a whole village to raise a tent....
Lubec Arts Alive 2011 underway with community gathering to paint herring cut-outs
Marcia Chaffee, John McMurray, and Jean Bookman assemble thesmaller herring onto the steel rods.
The gorgeous fish head, fins, and tail were painted by local artist Claudia Mahlman.
The 12" wide herring sculpture was set into concrete by Dick Hoyt, Rob Chaffee, John McMurray, Steve Silverman, and Nate Rosebrooks. Thanks guys!

What a week! Lubec Arts Alive 2011 came and went and boy do we have a fantastic new piece of community artwork on display in downtown Lubec. To all of those who came by to paint a fish, create art on the beach, or to lend a hand, thank you!!!!
Again, a fabulous committee worked behind the scenes for the past few months to make the project a reality. Kudos to them for sticking-it-out despite busy schedules with work and family, to bring an awesome community art experience to Lubec.
Next time you drive through downtown, take a gander at the 12 foot' herring sculpture in the garden at the smokehouse museum. It is a fabulous burst of creative enthusiasm, and I imagine on a day like to today, with a cleansing coastal breeze, is doing its thing and spinning to show all its colors.
It was an honor to work with Addison sculptor John McMurray. His years of experience as both an artist and a teacher benefited us and he was a joy to have on board for this project. We are grateful for his patience and energy!

LUBEC ARTS ALIVE THIRD ANNUAL EVENT
Between July 5 and 8th Lubec will once again be the setting for a community arts event, encouraging and enlivening the arts in the easternmost town of the lower 48 states.
This year’s community art work, inspired by local artist Jean Bookman, is a kinetic sculpture to be erected in Lubec. The 8 foot long likeness of a herring, will have 25 moveable small fish within it’s stainless steel frame. The public is invited to paint a fish- whimsical, colorful, realistic or otherwise - a tribute to Lubec’s heritage and the herring and sardine commercial industry. Stop by the tent at Flat Iron Corner from 10-3 pm on Tuesday July 5 or Wednesday July 6 to paint a fish. Artist and sculptor John McMurray of Addison is the supporting artist of the project, bringing years of teaching, art making and kinetic sculpture design to Lubec Arts Alive.
On July 8th everyone is invited to create Art on the Beach, building imaginative forms and sculpture with found objects. This event occurs at Mowry Beach, in back of the High School and also accessible via Pleasant Street, between 10 am and 1 pm. Bring your inspiration, sunscreen, and something to drink.
The 3rd annual Lubec Arts Alive event is sponsored by Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, local businesses and contributions from local residents. All venues are free and open to all ages. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Art materials supplied for the “painting of the fish”. Events continue the celebration of Lubec’s Bicentennial.

This beautiful thirty minute film by Jon Wing Lum captures the event from beginning to end with footage of the portrait project, mural, Hamilton Cove environmental art, doorway installations, poetry reading, and the artists at work.

1) Park behind school and follow the marked Downeast Coastal Conservancy trail

There will be an Info booth will be set-up at Flatiron Corner, across from the Quik Shop.

The Portrait Project was a component of Lubec Arts Alive 2009. Over twenty Lubec townspeople (past and present) were either painted or drawn by artists-in-residence from the Union of Maine Visual Artists.
